When I Can't Sleep is a song from Hilda and the Mountain King. It is sung by the Icelandic folk pop band Pascal Pinon.

The song was originally a part of the album "Twosomeness" released in 2013.

Use in the movie[]

The song is played halfway through the movie, during a montage that shows the various characters at their darkest hour:

  • Hilda breaks down in tears when she learns that Trylla, despite her realisation that what she did was bad, has no idea how to reverse the changeling spell.
  • Frida is up all night in her room, visibly exhausted as she desperately does research to find a way to turn Hilda back to human.
  • David is clearly uncomfortable as his mom shows off her new Trolberg Safety Patrol uniform and is about to start her first night as bellringer.
  • Gerda Gustav is forced to stay on patrol all night with Erik Ahlberg, clearly bored.
  • Baba is also having trouble sleeping, as Tontu can only comfort the child by putting her under a blanket.
  • Alfur mourns the apparent death of Cedric during the last failed search for Hilda, holding onto one of the pigeon's feathers.
  • Johanna has failed again to find Hilda, barely escaped with her life after a troll attack, and is now barely able to sleep, weeping over whether or not she'll see her little girl again.
  • Twig is sleeping on Hilda's boots, lamenting his missing friend and owner.

Lyrics[]

I remind myself when I'm in the darkness

That half the world is awake

And when I can't sleep, I imagine I'm without

Till my eyes start to wake

When I head off for new adventures

And I find my feet on new paths

No matter how far away I end up

My heart always wants

In my deepest thought

The marrow of my goals

Oh oooh oh oooh

Oh oooh oh oooh

I remind myself when I'm in the darkness

That half the world is awake

And when I can't sleep I imagine I'm without (you)

Till my eyes start to wake

In my deepest thought

The marrow of my goals

All I need is already above me

Things I can not touch for yours to keep

In my deepest call

The marrow of my bones

All my past intentions

I lay them on the altar

Oh oooh oh oooh

Oh oooh oh oooh
