Van Gale's Lullaby is a song composed specifically for season 3 of the animated series.
The lyrics of the song are written by Mark Greenberg. The only instrument used in the song is a musical saw, played by John Upchurch.
Use in the series[]
The song is heard several times throughout the season, but most prominently in "Chapter 7: Strange Frequencies".
In "Chapter 2: The Fairy Mound", an instrumental version of the song is first heard when Astrid plays a recording of it near the Fairy Mound as part of her ritual to keep the mound from luring in people.
Another instrumental version of the song is heard in "Chapter 6: The Forgotten Lake", when Johanna plays it on the pan pipes Hilda brought, but inadvertently wakes up the Spider Frog this way.
The full song, with lyrics, is heard in "Chapter 7: Strange Frequencies", in which Hilda picks up the song on her radio after finding out the strange radiosignals she had been trying to decode came from Victoria Van Gale. The song is used to accompany a scene that shows Hilda, David and Frida at a low point in their friendship, caused by Hilda accidentally ruining the townhall meeting Frida tried to organize for the nisse in Trolberg:
- Hilda angrily takes down all her notes and other research, then lies down on her bed.
- One of the wanted posters Hilda made of her dad is seen coming loose from the pole it was attached to, and fly off in the wind.
- Tontu is in his bed in Nowhere Space, clearly having trouble getting to sleep.
- David is in his own bed, likewise having trouble to sleep.
- In her room, Frida looks at a picture of her and her friends when they were younger, clearly feeling sad how things have turned out.
Lyrics[]
Lay down your head
Heed my warning
Let the airwaves tell my tale
Left with regrets
And misgivings
With no wind in my sail
Hope to return
But I'm not certain
What the future may unveil
Trivia[]
