The Polecat, real name unknown, is a character appearing in the Season 3 episode "Chapter 5: The Job" and it's tie-in adaptation "Hilda and the Faratok Tree".
Appearance[]
The Polecat is a skinny man with than skin. The book describes him as a hungry-eyed man wearing a huge fur coat and a deerstalker cap.
Personality[]
The Polecat is quite a shady man with a bad reputation amongst the sailors of The Salty Maiden. When he enters the tavern, everybody falls silent or tries to ignore him. He doesn't like to get his own hands dirty, especially not if a job is dangerous, and thus hires whoever is willing to do the job for him, no questions asked.
In the tie-in books, he also has a low tolerance for people who ask questions he regards unnecessary or stupid. This character trait is absent in the animated series.
Biography[]
Animated series[]
At some point prior to his first appearance, The Polecat bribed a Vittra and thus learned a Troll had hidden a large hoard in the ruins of Fort Ahlberg. When he investigated, he discovered the stories were true. The hoard consisted mostly of empty boxes, but among them was a chest filled with gold. Overjoyed, the Polecat accidentally knocked down a lamp and thus gave himself away. He barely escaped the angry troll, who threw a rock at his truck as the Polecat drove off.
Determined to get the treasure, the Polecat send his associates Gunther and Garth to get the chest for him from the ruins. When he first appears, he enters The Salty Maiden shorty after Anders has arrived in Trolberg and is having lunch there with Hilda and her friends The Polecat is looking for someone that can pick up the chest for him. Most guests in the tavern quickly look the other way, but Hilda, who wants her father to stay around for a while, immediately volunteers him so he can have a job. The Polecat hires Anders and offers him a large reward if he can get the job done before sunset. Since Anders had no car, he loans Anders his truck. Hilda, who knows a faster way to the castle ruins, comes along, though the Polecat makes it clear he will not pay extra for her services.
He is not seen again after this, making it unclear what became of him.
Tie-in books[]
In the tie-in book, the Polecat also hires Anders to pick up the chest at the Castle Ruins. While in the series he gets along well with Anders and Hilda, here he is much more aggressive. He gets annoyed when Anders asks him where the Castle Ruins are exactly, as he is not familiar with the Trolberg area. And while he willingly gave Anders his truck in the animated series, here he does so with great reluctance.
