The Fairy Entity is a character that first appears in the tie-in book "Hilda and the Fairy Village", and also in the final episode of the series Chapter 8: The Fairy Isle.
It is the great controlling spirit-like being that controls everything in Fairy Country, and is implied to be in fact the embodiment of Fairy Isle itself[1] Although it only shows up in a single episode, its actions had a great impact on the history of Johanna and Hilda's family.
Appearance[]
The Fairy Entity's body is almost entirely hidden under a large, black cloak. The only visible parts are its arms, which are black and have four, claw-like fingers. Its face is a glowing orb.
The tie-in book describes it as a luminous, stooped figure.
The entity usually speaks with a calm, yet eerie voice, but can switch to a more menacing demonic voice when it gets mad.
Abilities[]
The Fairy Entity has full control over Fairy Country and everything that happens there.
It also has several other magical powers, like the ability to heal people. It loves to make bargains with people.
Biography[]
Animated series[]
It is unknown how old The Fairy Entity is. It resides in the heart of Fairy Isle, in a cave where all vegetation is rotting and the island is clearly in decline. All fairies respect and fear the Fairy Entity.
Years ago, when Johanna was still a baby, she became terribly sick and no doctor could help her. To save their daughter, Phinium and Lydia visited the Fairy Entity to ask for help. The Entity agreed to cure Johanna, on the condition that her parents would hand her over to the Entity on Johanna's tenth birthday. Out of options, they both agreed. When Johanna turned ten and it was time for Phinium and Lydia to uphold their end of the bargain, they negotiated a new bargain with the Fairy Entity; they would give themselves to the Entity instead and move to Fairy Isle forever, never to visit the human world again. Again, the Entity agreed. Thus, Phinium and Lydia were forced to leave their daughter behind in the care of her aunt Astrid and moved to Fairy Isle.
After Hilda attempts to rescue her father Anders from Fairy Country, she and Johanna both end up on Fairy Isle and reunite with Phinium and Lydia. Astrid also comes to them. Unfortunately, this negates the bargain they originally made with the Fairy Entity. Astrid, Phinium, and Lydia all know the Entity will now never let them leave, and they fear the Entity too much to go against its wishes. They try to convince Johanna and Hilda to just submit to the Entity's will and stay on the island, but while Johanna is tempted, Hilda is having none of it and even plans to go talk with the Fairy Entity herself. Astrid stops her from actually doing so.
When Johanna and Hilda try to escape anyway with the help of the Deer-foxes and their light bridges, Astrid goes to bargain with the entity herself. She points out to the entity how it is dying and how it is only making things harder for itself by stubbornly holding onto the claim it has on Johanna's life, even though there's nothing to be gained from this claim. The Entity however is enraged by Astrid's rudeness and does everything in its power to stop Hilda and Johanna from leaving; it sprouts hostile plants and sicks an army of Eyes onto them. Thanks to Phinium, Lydia, the deer-foxes, and Johanna discovering her own fairy powers, Hilda and Johanna eventually escape anyway. But since the bargain has been broken, Johanna's childhood sickness returns the moment she leaves Fairy Country. She is saved when Astrid finally gets through to the Fairy Entity by offering her own life for Johanna's. Astrid in turn is then saved when Victoria Van Gale (who had ended up in Fairy Country after her botched Nowhere Space experiment in "Chapter 5: The Windmill) arrives in the cave and offers herself to the Entity in Astrid's place. The Entity accepts and spares Astrid, but casts her out of Fairy Country for good for being so rude. Astrid doesn't mind since she gets to return to her family this way, and Victoria also doesn't mind the deal she made as she was already planning to stay in Fairy Country.
Tie-in books[]
In "Hilda and the Fairy Village", the Entity's role is largely the same as in the series, except here Astrid does not seek out the entity until after Johanna and Hilda already made their escape. The scene where Victoria van Gale shows up is also different; here, Victoria is more confrontational and demanding with the entity, and shows no fear for It. She offers the Entity her services and uses her scientific knowledge to help restore Fairy Isle, which is declining, but demands the Entity will stop bargaining for people's lives. Astrid fully expects the Entity to smite Victoria, but much to her surprise the Entity submits to Victoria's demands, having met its match.
