The Stone Forest is a huge network of caves hidden deep in the mountains just outside Trolberg. It's name comes from the dozens of tree-like stone pillars that support the roof of these caves, which give it the appearance of a thick forest. It is left ambiguous if these pillars are actual trees that somehow petrified, or if they only look like trees.

In the graphic novels, the forest is first seen in "Hilda and the Stone Forest" after Hilda and Johanna end up here after an incident with Nowhere Space. The forest also appears in the next story "Hilda and the Mountain King". In the animated series, the forest first appears in "Chapter 13: The Stone Forest", and it's adaptation "Hilda and the White Woff".

The caves are the homes to many different trolls, who hide here during the daytime. There is also a large population of Rock-Chewing Slugs, including at least one gigantic slug.

The caves form a complicated maze in which only Trolls know their way. There is at least one central chamber with a waterfall and a small lake called the plunge pool[1]. In the animated series, the main entrance to the forest can close and open on it's own.

The entrances to the Stone Forest can be closed off by trolls to prevent anyone from finding the forest during the day.

Trivia[]

  • The mountain that the stone forest is in is called Boot Mountain in the tie-in novels. The graphic novels and animated series don't mention the name of the mountain.
