The mother kraken is a character that appeared in Season 2 episode "Chapter 7: The Beast of Cauldron Island" and the tie-in book "Hilda and the Ghost Ship".
Appearance[]
The mother kraken is a massive sea monster with dozens of eyes and tentacles and a large mountain-shaped shell atop her head.
Biography[]
The mother kraken has been asleep in the Björgfjord for centuries, with her shell becoming known as Cauldron Island. According to Wood Man, she was supposed to sleep for at least another 175 years. However, she woke up early at the end of "Chapter 6: The Old Bells of Trolberg" when officers of the Trolberg Safety Patrol tested the underwater bell in the fjord.
Once awake, the mother kraken began to attack ships in the fjord to feed the wood to her children. The sailors in the area blamed these attacks on the Lindworm, who was living on Cauldron Island. Erik Ahlberg thus assembles a fleet to attack the island and the Lindworm. Hilda and Frida investigate and thus find the real culprit. When Ahlberg attacks with his fleet, the Kraken reveals herself and wrecks multiple boats. Hilda and Frida are eventually able to direct it's attention to a nearby ship graveyard, which the Kraken can use to feed her young without having to sink any ships.
These events are also incorporated into the book "Hilda and the Ghost Ship". In the book, Hilda compares Cauldron Island being a kraken to how the mountain next to her old house turned out to be Illus.
