Kald is a minor character from the graphic novel "Hilda and the Midnight Giant" and a supporting character in the animated series and "Hilda and the Faratok Tree".
She is one of the ancient giants who was the winterbringer that only appeared when during a blizzard as a vague and colossal shadow lived in the valleys long before humans themselves arrived, and eventually left Earth for parts unknown.
Biography[]
Graphic novels[]
In the graphic novels, Kald is only seen in a 1-panel flashback, and on a two-page image in "Hilda and the Midnight Giant" depicting the giants of old. She plays no direct part in any of the stories as the giants left Earth long ago by the time the graphic novel is set.
Animated series[]
In the animated series, Kald is briefly seen in Wood Man's book The Giants of Old in the episode "Chapter 2: The Midnight Giant".
She plays a main role in Season 3's episode "Chapter 3: The Giantslayer". In this episode, Hilda meets Kald after she and Wood Man travel 3000 years back in time because of the Faratok tree. When Hilda arrives in the past, Kald's brother Drib has been taken captive by a human army led by the boy Halvor, who plan to use him as bait for the other giants. Kald knows it's a trap and that she thus cannot free Drib herself. Hilda thus goes to the village to talk with Halvor herself, but he does not listen to her. When she tries to free Drib herself that night, Drib accidentally knocks her off him and she temporarily loses consciousness. When Hilda wakes up, she sees how Kald makes her way to the village to find Drib, but is attacked by Halvor and his army. Halldór comes to her aid and together they defeat the humans, but are then forced to retreat.
Hilda follows them by launching herself from a catapult onto Kald. Kald takes her to a meeting of the other giants, where they discuss that the world has become too small for them. Through Kald, Hilda tries to convince them otherwise, but Kald reminds Hilda that Halvor is not the only problem. Even if they could make peace with him, there are humans the world over that fear giants.
Eventually, Hilda is able to convince Halvor of his errors when she tells them her house, like his, was also crushed by a giant. Halvor frees Drib, who reunites with his sister. Both giants then leap into space, leaving the Earth for good.
Novelization[]
The events from "Chapter 3: The Giantslayer" are adapted into "Hilda and the Faratok Tree". The plot here differs from the animated series at several points. Hilda actually does manage to free Drib herself, but when he flees from the camp, Drib accidentally runs towards a hill where Halvor's army has hidden a large number of catapults to ambush the giants with. Halvor orders his army to attack Drib, after which Kald, Gertl and Einarr come to his aid. Together they destroy the catapults and leave with Drib. Like in the animated series, the giants then decide at a meeting to leave the Earth for good, and follow up on their idea when Halvor and his soldiers attack them again. Drib and Kald are the last to leave, but before they depart they help put out the forest fires that Halvor and his army inadvertently started after Halvor apologizes to them both.
Trivia[]
- Despite being taller, she is depicted as Drib's younger sister.
