This unnamed Forest Giant is a character who appears in "Chapter 11: The House in the Woods" and the book "Hilda and the Nowhere Space".
Personalty[]
The forest giant is quite greedy and short-tempered, as he demands to his own desires thus may act like ferocious beast occasionally.
He's also quite obnoxious and strongly implied to be suffering from an inferiority complex due to his knowledge that he is nowhere near as tall as the giants of old, like Jorgen. When he first meets Hilda, he accuses her and other humans of always overlooking him due to his small size, and later, while chasing Hilda and Wood Man, he accidentally refers to other giants as "proper giants"; something he immediately feels ashamed about. The novelization further emphasizes this.
He likes to hoard stuff he either finds or wins in a game in a hollow iron pine tree in The Great Forest.
Biography[]
Animated series[]
The Forest Giant likes to play Elf Poker with Elves and the Wood Man. The fact that he can play cards with Elves implies he signed the paperwork needed to be able to see them. At some point prior to his first appearance, Wood Man lost some of his belongings to the forest giant in a card game, and plotted to get them back. He intentionally lost a rope ladder to the giant as part of this plan.
When Hilda shows up in the Great Forest after accidentally having been brought there by a weather spirit, she encounters Wood Man, the Elves and the Forest Giant. Wood Man puts his plan in motion by betting Hilda in the card game and intentionally losing her to the giant, who proceeds to take her to the tree where he stores his loot. This way. Hilda can use the rope ladder to let Wood Man into the tree and allow him to take back his belongings, as well as some other items he lost. The giant catches them in the act however, and they barely escape from him.
Later in the episode, Alfur and Twig, who are looking for Hilda, also find the giant's tree. The Giant catches them snooping around and angrily demands they bring him Hilda, but the Great Raven interferes and drives the giant off. He is not seen again after this.
Novelization[]
The plot of Wood Man losing Hilda to the giant so she can help him steal back his belongings was adapted into the book "Hilda and the Nowhere Space", but with a few differences. In this book Hilda ends up in the Great Forest after following Jellybean out of the city, but losing track of him afterwards. After she and Wood Man escape from the Giant's iron pine, the giant pursuits them, but the two are able to escape from him by hiding in a hole under the roots of a bristlecone, which turns out to be Jellybean's lair. The giant is not seen again after this. The scene where he encounters Twig and Alfur and is attacked by the Great Raven does not happen in this continuity.
