Elves and Wood Man playing Elf Poker

Elf Poker is a card game popular among Elves.

The game can be seen in "Chapter 11: The House in the Woods", when Wood Man is playing it with a group of Elves and a Forest Giant, to whom he deliberately loses Hilda. Later in the same episode, Alfur is forced to attend the poker game to get information from the other elves about where Hilda is.

Rules[]

The rules for Elf Poker are detailed in Hilda's Book of Beasts and Spirits. They differ greatly from regular poker.

  • Prior to a game, Elves sign paperwork to promise they won't cheat.
  • First, each player gets 5 cards. The other cards are piled in the middle of the table.
  • The goal is to get 4 of the same card.
  • Cards in Elf Poker are organised into four families: Cats, Crowns, Quills and Kerchiefs.
  • The youngest player starts the game by asking another player for cards that can complete a set. If the other player has the card that is asked for, they have to give it up and the player whose turn it is can ask for another card. This can even be from the same other player they got their previous card from.
  • If the other player does not have the card that was asked for, they will say "go fish". The player whose turn it was will then draw a card from the pile, and the player who told them to Go Fish gets the next turn.
  • Once a player collects a whole set of four matchin cards, they put them face down in front of them.
  • The first player to turn all of his/her cards into sets wins the round.
