Drib is a minor character from the graphic novel "Hilda and the Midnight Giant". He also appears as a supporting character in season 3 of the animated series and "Hilda and the Faratok Tree".
Drib is one of the ancient giants who lived in the valleys long before humans themselves arrived, and eventually left Earth for parts unknown. Like his sister Kald, he is covered in snow. Despite his rather small size compared to the other giants, Drib is actually older than his sister Kald.
Biography[]
Graphic novels[]
In the graphic novels, Drib is only seen on a two-page image in "Hilda and the Midnight Giant" depicting the giants of old. He plays no direct part in any of the stories as the giants left Earth long ago by the time the graphic novel is set.
Animated series[]
In "Chapter 3: The Giantslayer", Hilda meets Drib after she and Wood Man travel 3000 years back in time because of the Faratok tree. When Hilda arrives in the past, Drib has been taken captive by a human army led by the boy Halvor, who plan to use him as bait for the other giants. Hilda tries to reason with Halvor to let Drib go, but when her attempts prove futile she waits till nightfall and then sneaks into the camp to free Drib herself. She steals as sword from a sleeping guard and cuts Drib's hands free. Unfortunately, her walking around on his body gives Drib an itch, and when he tries to scratch himself, he knocks Hilda off him, causing her to temporarily loose consciousness. When Hilda comes through, Kald and Halldór arrive at the village to rescue Drib, but are forced to retreat after a fight with Halvor's army.
After Halvor fights Hilda and accidentally sets fire to his village in the process, Hilda finally gets through to him that the giants are not destructive on purpose. Halvor frees Drib, who uses his snow and ice breath to put out all the fires. Afterwards he reunites with his sister. Both giants then leap into space, leaving the Earth for good.
Novelization[]
The events from chapter 3 are adapted into the story "Hilda and the Faratok Tree". The story starts the same, but here Hilda does manage to free Drib on her own. Unfortunately, when he flees from the camp, Drib accidentally runs towards a hill where Halvor's army has hidden a large number of catapults to ambush the giants with. Halvor orders his army to attack Drib, after which Kald, Gertl and Einarr come to his aid. Together they destroy the catapults and leave with Drib.
Hilda follows them. Soon after the battle, Drib is called by Aldinn to attend a meeting of the giants. During the meeting, Drib is carried by Jaðarrokk, just like in the image in the graphic novel. The Giants decide the world has become too small for them and that they should leave. When Halvor and his army attack again, the giants follow up on their plan and leap into space one by one. Drib and Kald are the last to leave, but before they depart they help put out the forest fires that Halvor and his army inadvertently started.
