The Fairy Mound is the second episode of the third season, and the twenty-eight episode overall, of the Hilda TV series. It was released on December 7th, 2023 on Netflix.

Convinced that Fairies exist in Tofoten, Hilda starts investigating around town... only to uncover a troubling mystery involving her own family.

Hilda and Astrid are outside, playing with Loam and Twig. After she climbs on a hill, Hilda loses sight of her aunt. Then mushrooms sprout from the hill, trapping her and dragging her underground. Fortunately, it turns out to be just a nightmare and Hilda wakes up in her room in Astrid’s house.
Due to her nightmare, Hilda arrives late for breakfast, and her friends worry something is wrong. Frida and David want to go souvenir shopping, so Astrid advises her to visit the shop near the post-office. She asks them to remind a certain Bjorn that he still owns Astrid money if they see him. Thus, they go there, but Hilda stays outside as she has other things on her mind. She is convinced Tofoten must have actual fairies. And she is going to find them.
Hilda thus goes around town asking the locals about fairies, but gets a lot of contradicting information about what they look like or what their powers are. However, a lot of people have no high opinion of them, thinking of them as dangerous creatures that abduct children to Fairy Country, never to be seen again. Hilda also finds a map about a fairy trail at a tourist information point, but it only leads them to a fake fairy mound filled with animatronic fairies. As David and Frida return to Astrid’s house, Hilda checks one more lead: the house with the many horseshoes she saw earlier. When she knocks, the door is answered by a grumpy old man named Jonas, who angrily orders Hilda to leave once she brings up the topic of Fairies. Fortunately, Astrid interferes and orders Jonas to leave Hilda alone. When Hilda asks her about fairies, she claims it’s just a story made up for tourists. She insists to keep this incident with Jonas a secret from Johanna.
That night, Astrid takes all of her guests to go camping. While enjoying a group of fireflies, Hilda suggests to her mom they could move to Tofoten, but Johanna declines. When asked why she left Tofoten in the first place, Johanna claims she outgrew it. When Hilda asks next why Johanna moved into the cabin after having Hilda rather than coming back to Tofoten, Johanna only tells her it’s hard to explain. Later that night, while Hilda is in her tent, she notices someone outside and follows this person. The mysterious cloaked figure heads for a hill and begins to perform some ritual there involving pan pipes music and charms. Then the person removes her cloak, and is revealed to be Astrid. Hilda is shocked, but retreats without being seen.
The following day, Hilda takes her friends to the hill. She theorizes it is an actual Fairy Mound, and Astrid is likely protecting it. As David climbs the hill, Hilda removes one of the charms that are lined up around the hill. Then, David suddenly vanishes. Elsewhere, Astrid and Johanna are spending time together. Astrid can tell Johanna is worried about bringing Hilda to Tofoten, but assures her there has been no “incident” since she left. Johanna also admits she never really forgave Astrid for not coming to Trolberg with her. Hence why Johanna had to go to boarding school. At the hill, Hilda and Frida are still looking for David, and it’s getting foggy. In the mist, they finally find David, who was also looking for them.
After Johanna and Astrid return home, the Pooka visits. He wants to borrow a casserole dish and in return offers to tell Johanna where Hilda and her friends went. Johanna is shocked to hear the Pooka saw Hilda, David, and Frida go to the Fairy Mound, and immediately heads there herself. At the fairy mound, the kids are still lost in the fog, and are confronted by creatures that look like flying, tentacled mushrooms with one eye. As the kids try to remain unseen by the creatures, Johanna arrives at the fairy mound, followed by Astrid. Johanna is furious at Astrid, who didn’t tell her there is still an actual fairy mound in Tofoten. Astrid reminds her they need to rescue the kids first. They dig into the Fairy Mound with spades, chasing away the mushrooms and pulling Frida and David out. Hilda remains behind for a moment, and sees two cloaked figures approach her, calling her name. Then, she too is pulled out of the Fairy Mound.
The group returns to Astrid’s house. Johanna is still angry at Astrid. She confesses to Hilda that she too had a close encounter with a real Fairy Mound in her youth. Hence why she left Tofoten and never took Hilda here. Astrid adds that Hilda and friends were just in the outer part of Fairy Country. Had Fairy Isle found them, they would have been lost. Fortunately, the charms she gave them kept that from happening.
After this incident, Johanna has no desire to stay in Tofoten, so she and the others pack up and head home.
