I am Alfur, of the Northern Counties.

―Alfur's usual catchphrase when presenting himself.

Alfur Aldric (/ˈælfɜr/ AL-fur) is an elf.

He appears in the graphic novels, animated series, and Hilda Tie-In Series, though has a notably larger role in the latter two.

Appearance[]

Alfur is an elf with a white complexion.

He wears a pointy red hat on his head and a red shirt. He has stick-like arms and legs, with no visible neck.

Personality[]

Alfur is a side character and a friend to Hilda.

Not much is revealed about his personality in the graphic novels, but in the animated series he is shown to love writing reports about Trolberg to the other Aldric elves. He is mostly known for paperworks and contracts, such as contracts for the exiles from the "The Lost Clan" and paperworks so that other humans can see him, such as Hilda and Frida.

Alfur has a few phobias:

In the novelization, he and Hilda have a rougher start of their friendship, with Alfur even calling Hilda a bully at one point, but he quickly warms up to her.

Relationships[]

Alfur was the first elf to contact Hilda after the other elves decided they wanted Hilda and Johanna to move. In the animated series, he has since become one of her closest friends.

Alfur is a member of the Aldric Family.

He appears to have a crush on Adeline, but it hasn't been confirmed quite yet if he did like her.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

Chapter 1 (45)

Alfur's first scene after Hilda signed the paperwork

Alfur lived in the elf village surrounding the cabin build by Hilda's great-grandad.

When the Prime Minister decided to have Hilda and her mom forcefully evicted, Alfur came to their aid. Knowing Hilda didn't cause any problems intentionally since she and her mom couldn't even see the Elves, he helped her fill out the proper paper work so they could negotiate. He also helped her get an appointment with the mayor. After even the Prime Minister himself refused to settle the conflict peacefully since that would require the king himself to intervene, Alfur decided to break protocols and bring Hilda to the king.

Hilda managed to form a truce with the king, but soon afterwards her house was destroyed by Jorgen, forcing Hilda and Johanna to move to Trolberg anyway. Alfur quickly arranged a passport so he could come along, making him the first Elf to visit Trolberg (or so he believed).

In Trolberg, Alfur went to live with Hilda in her new home, and accompanied her on many of her adventures. When Hilda brought home an amnesiac bird that would eventually turn out to be The Great Raven, Alfur helped him after Johanna put him out of the house (believing him to be just a regular bird). Alfur even defended the raven against Trevor by attacking the boy, making great use of his invisibility. Later, he watched the Bird Parade with Hilda and Johanna.

In "Chapter 5: The Troll Rock", Alfur stowed away in Johanna's purse when she went to Parent's Night at The Ahlberg School, since he wanted to report on School Life. Instead, he got dragged into hunting down a young troll that David had accidentally brought into the school. Later in "Chapter 6: The Nightmare Spirit", he also helped Frida and Hilda when they tried to trap the Marra that was bothering David, since the Marra would not be able to see him.

In "Chapter 7: The Lost Clan", Alfur discovered he wasn't the only Elf in Trolberg after all; the long lost clan of the Bragga Family had settled there after having been exiled from the northern countries many generations ago due to presenting an uncompleted real estate contract (between them and Alfur's family no less) to the king. Alfur sought them out to try and end their exile, only to learn the Bragga had sworn off all forms of paper work. Instead, they demanded that Alfur would settle the old conflict by combat. Frida interfered and offered to find a solution that could benefit everybody. At her request, Alfur, Hilda, and Frida sought out a Lindworm and had her destroy the contract; the only way to render any Elf contract void. Thus, the exile of the Bragga was ended. They had no desire to leave their home in the Wall of Trolberg however, and their leader, Bartell, willingly gave Alfur the plot of land that the two families had been arguing over all those years ago.

In "Chapter 8: The Tide Mice", Alfur helped Hilda and Frida find a way to reverse the Tide Mice enchantment Hilda had used on David and Johanna. He was the only one able to read the fine print for all the instructions to the ritual. He tried, unsuccessfully, to cheer up Hilda in "Chapter 9: The Ghost" after she failed to retrieve Frida's lost book.

Chapter 11 (50)

Alfur and Twig looking for Hilda.

In "Chapter 11: The House in the Woods", after Hilda got lost in the wilderness following her adventure with the Weather Spirits, an elf named Barch helped her send Johanna and Alfur a message by email. Alfur and Twig then traced the letter back to Barch in an attempt to find Hilda. He ended up playing poker with Barch and his friends for 6 hours before winning the information that Hilda had been taken by a Forest Giant. Twig and Alfur found the tree were the Giant stored all his loot, but Hilda was not there. The Giant caught them snooping around, but the two were rescued by the Great Raven. Together, the three of them found Hilda and the Wood Man in a magical house, but ended up trapped inside as well until Hilda figured out they could overload the house by asking it for too many things to give them. When it became too much for the house to handle, it created a doorway back to Hilda's house in Trolberg, allowing the five friends to escape.

In "Chapter 13: The Black Hound", Alfur correctly theorizes that the Black Hound was a Barghest, though he thought it strange that it was in Trolberg as they usually live in the mountains. Later, he learned about Nowhere Space and was overjoyed by the thought of how many lost paperwork might be found there. He declared it a golden age for Elf exploration.

Season 2[]

In "Chapter 1: The Troll Circle", Alfur accompanies Hilda when she is invited by Erik Ahlberg and Gerda Gustav to go on patrol with them after she won an essay contest. Like Hilda, he quickly figures out that Ahlberg is only out for glory, and deleberately makes things worse (like angering Trolls with a bell). At the end of the episode he assures Hilda that, while Erik will hide the truth about how he almost got killed, his report about their day will contain the whole story.

After having been absent in episodes 2 - 5, Alfur plays another role in "Chapter 6: The Old Bells of Trolberg", when Bartell Bragga comes to Hilda's house to ask for her help to stop Erik Ahlberg's plan to have the bells of Trolberg ring every hour. Alfur joins the Lost Clan to attack the central belltower and distract the Safety Patrol officers there so Hilda and Frida can disable the mechanical bellringers. Alfur is clearly not used to combat or riding a pigeon; he only throws a single rock at the officers, and immediately appologizes for it. At the end of the episode, he is seen in the Bragga village celebrating the victory with them.

In "Chapter 7: The Beast of Cauldron Island", Alfur accompanies David to Cauldron Island to warn the Lindworm that Erik Ahlberg is comming for her; a lot of ships have been sunk in the harbor lately, and the local sailors blame the Lindworm. When the Lindworm refuses to leave her island without a battle first, Alfur comes with the plan to ask the Lost Clan to stage a mock battle with her so she can leave afterwards. The plan goes south, however, when the Lost Clan insist on on a real fight and attack the Lindworm. Alfur is quick to let David have the credit for the plan. When Cauldron Island is revealed to be a gigantic Kraken, the Lindworm evacuates along with Alfur, David, and the Lost Clan.

In "Chapter 8: The Fifty Year Night", Alfur is tasked by Johanna to keep an eye on Hilda, who has been grounded. Along with Hilda, he gets caught up in a time travel adventure when they discover that certain editions of the magazine Trolberg Digest allow the reader to travel back in time to a night 50 years before. Alfur tries to keep track of the various timelines, and the changes that Hilda makes, but soon gets confused himself. When Hilda's actions attract the attention of a Time Worm, two alternate versions of Alfur are seen getting eaten until Matilda Pilqvist, who was the one that enchanted the magazine in the first place, helps Alfur and Hilda correct the timeline by destroying the original magazine.

Alfur has a small role in "Chapter 9: The Deerfox", in which he alerts the Lost Clan that Twig has gone missing, and hears from them they saw Twig leave the city.

Season 2 Chapter 12 40

Alfur and Adeline.

In "Chapter 12: The Replacement", Alfur is informed by a new elf, Alvin, that he has been relieved from his post as Trolberg Correspondent, because the Elf Prime Minister and his cabinet believe Alfur's reports about his adventures in Trolberg to be false. When Alfur and Hilda protest, and offer to have Hilda fill out an eyewitness confirmation form to verify Alfur's reports are correct, Alvin denies them for this, stating that Hilda is not a reliable eye witness, and that any additional paperwork concerning Alfur's case is put on hold. That afternoon, the Delegation for the Return of Wayward Elves comes to the Trolberg harbor to escort Alfur home. Alfur and Hilda ask the Bragga Family for help, and Agnes volunteers to disguise herself as Alfur. Unfortunately, she can't keep up the appearances for long before her temper gets the best of her, and Alfur is forced to reveal himself. When Alfur tries to escape from the Delegation, the chase leads them to the Farmers Market. There, the Elves are mistaken by the locals, who can't see them, for spirits, and eventually captured by Gerda Gustav when they enter a lighthouse decoration. Alvin and Alfur are the only elves not captured since they jumped out of the lighthouse in time. Along with Hilda, they follow Gerda to the HQ of the Trolberg Safety Patrol. To rescue the Elves, Alfur goes along with Gerda's misconception that she is dealing with Spirits; he convinces her that he is a member of the Spirit Safety Patrol, and tricks Gerda into releasing the captured "spirits" into his custody. This impresses Alvin enough that he himself fills out the eyewitness confirmation form to clear Alfur's name, so Alfur can stay in Trolberg.

In "Chapter 13: The Stone Forest", Alfur is in Frida's house to help her with her witch homework. When Hilda, who went out to get Frida some dust from the castle ruins for her next spell, fails to return, Alfur, Frida and David go to Hilda’s house. They find the place deserted. As Frida and David set out to find Hilda, Alfur remains at home. When Tontu returns home and tells Alfur that Hilda and Johanna are in the Stone Forest, Alfur borrows the pigeon Cedric from Bartell and sets out to find them. He first encounters David, Frida, and Gerda, who spend the night in the woods. Gerda recognizes Alfur’s voice from their previous meeting, and learns he is actually an Elf. Alfur next locates an entrance to the Stone Forest, just in time to help Hilda and Johanna escape the Two-Headed Troll. When everybody is safe, Alfur returns to Trolberg with them.

Hilda and the Mountain King[]

In the movie, after Hilda and Baba swap lifes due to a changeling spell, Alfur accompanies Johanna on all her searches for Hilda. The second time, he even brings Cedric along. When a group of Trolls attack them, Alfur and Cedric distract the trolls so Johanna can escape, but Cedric is eaten by the troll in the process.

After Hilda and Baba are restored to normal, Alfur, along with Tontu, deduces the spell was broken due to both children being reunited with their real mothers.

Season 3[]

Alfur's role in Season 3 is notably smaller than in the previous two seasons, as he is mainly used for comic relief. He accompanies Hilda and friends when they go to Tofoten and is surprised when Astrid reveals she can see him. He is not involved with Hilda's encounter with the Fairy Mound.

In "Chapter 5: The Job" he meets Anders, who of course cannot see him. when Anders is told about the paperwork, he tries to settle things with a handshake instead and is told by Alfur it doesn't work that way.

Season 3 Chapter 7 Image 9

Alfur helps Hilda with the radiosignals.

The only episode this season where Alfur plays a plot-critical role is "Chapter 7: Strange Frequencies". He helps Hilda to decode the strange radio signals her radio has started to pick up, and which might come from Anders, who has mysteriously vanished following the events of "Chapter 5". They make progress, but when it turns out the signals are instead coming from Victoria Van Gale, Hilda gives up. She is about to throw away all her research, but Alfur holds onto some of their notes and investigates further. He borrows Cedric and makes a trip across the area around Trolberg to see if he can find out more about the radio signals with the network of Elf radios. By mapping out Alfur's research, Hilda is able to pinpoint the source of the signals to be in Tofoten, and thus realizes her father, who is with Victoria, is trapped in the Fairy Mound. She and her friends secretly go back to Tofoten to rescue him. When Johanna finds Hilda gone and demands to know where she is, ALfur can't help but tell the truth. Johanna thus goes to Tofoten herself, and forbids Alfur from coming.

Alfur is thus absent for the plot of "Chapter 8: The Fairy Isle". He returns at the very end, where he is seen helping Gerda Gustav make notes on the Marra during the Bird Parade.

In the graphic novels, Alfur only appears in "Hilda and the Midnight Giant".

His role in this story is for most part identical to that in the animated adaptation, with the one major difference being that he does not go to Trolberg with Hilda and Johanna after the destruction of their house.

In the Hilda Tie-In Series, which adapts which adapts Season 1 (all episodes except 8 + 9, and the events of 10 only get mentioned) and Season 2 (all episodes except for 11, 12, and the main story of 9), Alfur is a main character in "Hilda and the Hidden People", which even slightly expands his role from the animated series. There is a small subplot where Alfur can't tell Hilda where the palace of the Elf King is because he, like all Elves, signed a secrecy form, but he gets around the problem by pointing out the location on a map of the wilderness without actually saying anything.

He becomes a minor character in the other books, where, aside from the adaptations of "Chapter 7: The Lost Clan" and "Chapter 8: The Fifty Year Night", he is only seen in a few scenes adapted directly from the aforementioned episodes. He is added as an aditional character to the adaptation of "Chapter 5: The Windmill", an episode that originally did not feature him. He finds David at the Windmill after David has been captured by Victoria Van Gale's nisse, and warns Hilda and Frida (who are at Cauldron Island to deal with the Kraken). On the other hand, he does not participate in the adventure with the Kraken due to having been away to a grammar conference in the Northen Counties. In Hilda and the White Woff he goes to David's house and wakes him up to tell him about Hilda an Johanna who are missing after a fight and asks him for help to search for them. They decide to involve Frida in finding them. In the original episode, he and David both stay behind at Frida's house with her as Hilda leaves to collect the dust Frida needs. All three of them go to Hilda's house the next day and discover there that Hilda and Johanna are missing.

He is completely absent in the final three books, except for a brief mentioning in "Hilda and the Faratok Tree". His role in helping Hilda with the radio signals instead goes to David and Tontu.

Trivia[]

  • Due to his small size, he can easily pick a lock.
  • The word "Alfur" means elf in Icelandic.
  • When first seen by Hilda, Alfur claims that he is tall for an elf. This claim however is contradicted by the fact that nearly all other Elves he is seen interacting with are just as tall as him, and "Chapter 12: The Replacement" introduces an elf that is even taller than Alfur; Aloysius.
  • Alfur's birthday is June 20th, which makes his zodiac sign a Gemini.
  • In Chapter 7: The Lost Clan, Alfur, due to his small size, wasn't able to blow the shell and needed Hilda to help, but 12 chapters later, nothing has changed about his appearance and he could now blow the shell. This is likely a continuity error.
